Getting Started with the Appalachian HillClimb Series

Become a Driver - Step by Step

If you are new to preparing a car or acquiring driver safety equipment, we STRONGLY recommend that you contact us directly before making any purchases. We are happy to help!

Recommended Partners

When you do purchase safety gear or vehicle components, we recommend our partners at Summit Racing Equipment, Hoosier Racing Tire, and others listed below.

Experience

Motorsport experience is recommended. Prior experience with official, sanctioned events (track days, autocross, road racing, or karting) is highly beneficial. Familiarity with tech, registration, timing, and scoring will help you get the most out of your first HillClimb.

Vehicle Safety Equipment

Invest in required and recommended safety gear, including roll bar/cage, fire suppression system, and approved racing restraint system. Most equipment can be sourced from our partners.

Driver Safety Equipment

Driver gear includes fire-resistant suit, gloves, shoes, socks, certified helmet, and arm restraints/window net. Loaner gear is available upon request. Head and neck restraint systems are recommended but not required.

HillClimb Licenses

SCCA HillClimb Drivers Licenses are optional; only a state-issued Drivers License is required. Competing in one event grants a Novice License; after a second event, the license is upgraded to Full.

HillClimb Novice Program

New HillClimbers receive guidance from a novice coach at their first event, offering support, instruction, and a go-to person for questions and direction.
